As people who read this know, I have recently updated my Phone to the HTC Desire.

And the more I use it the more it has got me wondering, can this or any smartphone replace all my other gadgets on day to day use?

Here is a list of gadgets I use all the time!

  1. Digital Camera
  2. Sat Nav
  3. PMP (portable media player) music and video’s, ipod touch in my case!
  4. Phone
  5. Laptop – Internet and Email

Lets look at my list in more detail.

1. Digital Camera

I travel a lot and in doing so always like to have a camera with me to capture those once only moments in life. Up until now that means always having my trusted digital camera with me. But with the camera technology being implemented in modern smartphones, really I am not so sure its needed anymore. I am not talking about serious picture taking but for everyday use the camera in the HTC desire seems good enough for me!

2. Sat Nav

As I have already said, I travel a lot and mostly to new addresses so Sat Nav is an essential tool for me. But now, I do not need a separate gadget for this.  If like me you have a Android based smartphone, then you now get free Google Sat Nav in the UK or USA (at time of writing). Plus nearly all GPS enabled phones now have a solution for Sat Nav be it free or paid for. So all you need is a Car Dock and away you go. Sat Nav gadget redundant!

3. PMP (Portable Music Player)

I currently have an Ipod Touch that I use for music and video when out and about. Most people will know that weather you love Apple or hate them the Ipod products are good at what they do. So can I get the same functionality from my phone? Yes is the answer. Granted it may not be quite such a fluid or polished experience but the functionality is there. The only time this might not be a adequate solution is if you use a bigger screen sized device. So yes a smartphone can replace a dedicated PMP Gadget if size is not an issue for you.

4. Phone

Well this goes without saying really. Yes a smartphone is a phone! All you can say here is does the fact that your device can do so much actually diminish the ability to work as a phone? Some people on some devices think so!

Here are some tweets from a couple of well known stand up comedians that I saw recently.

Jason_Manford @MrEdByrne that’s why I hate the iPad already. Fix this first. It’s like a builder starting another job before he’s finished your bathroom.
MrEdByrne @Jason_Manford Here here. “Has anyone else got a signal? Oh, all of you.”
Jason_Manford Why cant the Iphone work as a phone? I know the apps are cool but come on (Author note: maybe not word for word as the tweet has gone now?)
5. Laptop – Email and Internet
This is probably the big one? Can a smartphone really give you the access to the internet and email that you require for day to day use? Well lets start with the easy one – Email, yes is the answer here. Most if not all smartphones have good E-mail capabilities, for example my Android device interfaces seamlessly with both Google Mail and My company Exchange server. The same can be said for a Blackberry device etc, etc… So Email = No Problem
What about internet then? Now it gets complicated. For example, If you are a Blackberry user then your internet experience will not be as good as say a Android or Iphone user, using the default clients. The reason is that both the Android and Iphone OS’s use a WEBKIT based browser. What does this mean to you. Well both the Iphone and Android web experience is generally a good one, with web pages rendering on the phones just as they would on your pc. There are however some problems. Currently as I write this full flash support is not available on smartphones, however Adobe are about to release Flash 10 for some mobile platforms. Also the level of Java support varies across the platforms and this might cause you issues? And finally the size of your screen might cause you problems? But is this enough to stop your smartphone being used as your day to day gadget? Well I guess it just depends on what you need it for? If like me you normally only use the internet in the day for social networking, Googleing, News, Sports, and just general stuff then YES the internet on my smartphone is adequate. If you need more intensive use then may be the answer is NO.

Conclusion. Can one gadget do it all?

If not a full YES then near as dam it! And as the technology advances then we cant be far away from a full YES!
