As people who read this know, I have recently updated my Phone to the HTC Desire.

And the more I use it the more it has got me wondering, can this or any smartphone replace all my other gadgets on day to day use?

Here is a list of gadgets I use all the time!

1. Digital Camera
2. Sat Nav
3. PMP (portable media player) music and video’s, ipod touch in my case!
4. Phone
5. Laptop – Internet and Email

Lets look at my list in more detail.

1. Digital Camera

I travel a lot and in doing so always like to have a camera with me to capture those once only moments in life. Up until now that means always having my trusted digital camera with me. But with the camera technology being implemented in modern smartphones, really I am not so sure its needed anymore. I am not talking about serious picture taking but for everyday use the camera in the HTC desire seems good enough for me!

2. Sat Nav

As I have already said, I travel a lot and mostly to new addresses so Sat Nav is an essential tool for me. But now, I do not need a separate gadget for this.  If like me you have a Android based smartphone, then you now get free Google Sat Nav in the UK or USA (at time of writing). Plus nearly all GPS enabled phones now have a solution for Sat Nav be it free or paid for. So all you need is a Car Dock and away you go. Sat Nav gadget redundant!

3. PMP (Portable Music Player)

I currently have an Ipod Touch that I use for music and video when out and about. Most people will know that weather you love Apple or hate them the Ipod products are good at what they do. So can I get the same functionality from my phone? Yes is the answer. Granted it may not be quite such a fluid or polished experience but the functionality is there. The only time this might not be a adequate solution is if you use a bigger screen sized device. So yes a smartphone can replace a dedicated PMP Gadget if size is not an issue for you.

4. Phone

Well this goes without saying really. Yes a smartphone is a phone! All you can say here is does the fact that your device can do so much actually diminish the ability to work as a phone? Some people on some devices think so!
